Welcome to SolderMonkey.com!

SolderMonkey.com is a site discussing microcontrollers, FPGAs, and various other electonic design topics.  At the moment, this site is the home to two of my past projects, the Spastic MP3 Player and the Smart Home Streaming MP3 Player.  Information on both of these projects can be found using the links on the left.

This site is still under construction, but expect future updates to include new projects and guides for topics ranging from interfacing IDE hard drives to designing microcontrollers.  Please check back soon for more info!

 Update

MicrocontrollersI've been running a little behind schedule this summer.  School and work obligations are taking their tolls.  I have began developing the IDE drivers for the PIC microcontroller, but found that the newer drives will not function in 8-bit mode (that's what you get for following older specs), so I am going to need to get a bigger PIC and increase the data bus width to 16 bits.  The rest of the code looks like it is working fine, but I need to wire up a new test circuit to finish debugging and round out the feature set.  I hope to finish these drivers by the end of the year, school and work permitting.

 Tutorial Requirements Defined

MicrocontrollersThe hardware requirements and components for the simple portable MP3 player have been defined. The player will include a PIC microcontroller, Compact Flash memory, and a VS1011B MP3 decoder. All parts, except for the MP3 decoder, will be through-hole packages for ease of prototyping and experimentation.  Click "Read More" below for details.

 Possible MP3 Player Tutorial

MicrocontrollersI am thinking of possibly designing a very simple MP3 player project this summer, and create a tutorial on how to complete each step of the design.  It will hopefully be general enough to help in a broad range of designs.  I have added a new poll to see what types of priorities I should consider going into the design.  What type of player would you like to see?
